- Applications for the conservation camp are now available at the club or on our website. This 2 week overnight summer camp for girls and boys 13 -17 years of age offers a program of conservation education and instruction in outdoor recreation skills. It introduces youth to the ethical concepts and knowledge essential to a lifetime of properly enjoying our natural resources and the leisure activities that depend on their careful stewardship. Subjects include: forestry, soil conservation, wildlife management, archery, orienteering, basic camping and more. A state approved Basic Hunter Education Course and Boating Safety Course is also part of the program. Program is operated by Mass. Junior Conservation Camp, Inc with the assistance of state and local environmental agencies.
- Game feed February 8, 2003
Members started preparing for the game feed feast immediately following the Tuesday night meeting and continued right up to Saturday evening. The menu was Chicken Liver Pate, Venison K-Bobs, Smoked Fish, 12 point Venison Stew, Goose Teriyaki, Venison Shepherd’s Pie, Venison Chili, Venison Chop Suey, Cajun Striper, Antelope Meatballs, Venison Sausage, Alligator Tempora, Ostrich Meatloaf, wild Turkey Cacciatori, Country Fried Venison, Boar Rice Pilaf, Pheasant & Rabbit Marsala, Venison Demiglace and Smoked BBQ Buffalo. No one went away hungry. It was another successful game feed. We’d like to thank everyone who either donated game or were involved in helping make this function a huge success. A tip of the hat to all that helped.
The big surprise this year was the introduction of Lee’s new wood smoker oven. This gas-fired, wood smoker slowly cooks the meat at low temperatures. Many feasters remarked on the wonderful taste of the smoked fish and Buffalo.
My (Lj) personal highlight was when I was dining on some pheasant: I bit into some lead shot. Remembering the old saying “A shot for a shot,” I immediately redeemed my lead shot for some cherry brandy. While sipping my brandy, I shared this story with Gregg L., who is a Pots and Pans Specialist II at these functions, and he explained that unlike store bought food, you cannot “coax” these animals into the kitchen - some sort of shooting is usually required. He went on to explain that some of these birds were harvested by new hunters, and some of these young hunters are so quick on the draw that they sometimes double or triple the weight of the bird with lead shot. The birds harvested by the young hunters require more preparation time to pick out the shot, and sometimes a few are left behind. He went on to explain that the more seasoned hunters let the bird fly out a bit further, reducing the pattern on the bird. Gregg then returned to his station and resumed his trade at the sink.
- We are still having the Steak or Chicken shoots on Sunday’s. This is a fun time for all and at the end of the shoots we have a meat raffle. They start at 4:00 and generally end by 6:00. Children are always welcome. So please join us some Sunday afternoon. Call the club and find out when the next shoot is scheduled.
- This year we are having an Easter egg hunt, April 12th 10am-12pm. Look for a sign up sheet at the club. Deadline is April 5th for registration. You may call the club and we will register your child for the Egg hunt. The public is welcome to attend.
- The March 2nd Ice-Fishing derby:
There was plenty of ice for the 2nd Ice-Fishing derby of the year, with 20 plus inches to drill through, but the weather did not cooperate. Breakfast was served at 5 a.m. Many thanks to Kevin Long, Mike Collins, Skip Lukey, and Ken McMullen for providing a hearty breakfast!
The derby was from 6 p.m. to 1 p.m. with prizes for the largest bass, perch, and pickerel. Competing against 34 other contestants, Rich Brow led the derby early in the morning by catching a 6 lb 22 inch bass, a perch, and large pickerel on the same shiner in the same hole! If he had held this lead until 1 p.m. he would have been awarded 3 first place prizes of $85.00 each.
But alas, Lars Dwyer, A.K.A. “Judge”, caught a 21 inch pickerel to take the pickerel lead. And then Ed Tudor landed a 11 and ½ inch perch. So the prize money was divided up three ways. Congratulations to all three of the winners!
There were quite a few funny stories being shared at the bar after the derby, and one story involved towing attempts with 4-wheelers that ended up with people sliding in puddles.
- Lj's Sporting tips: This is the time of year to get your trailer, boat, boat motors, reels, and rods ready for the upcoming season!

- Don’t forget Trap shooting on Sunday afternoons. We start around 1:30. Even with this spell of cold weather, we have had quite a few participants. Come on down and join in the fun.
