Spring Cleanup 4/28/07

We would like to thank the many volunteers that participated in the Spring Cleanup. The grounds and club are ready for the months ahead. A lot of extras got done, due to the turn out. Thank you again. A quick reminder, after using the shooting range or trap range, please pick up after yourselves.

Margarittaville Night

We had our 2nd annual Margarita night on Saturday 5/5. Thank you to Kim & Boo Clark for the many hours of decorating they did even before the 'scheduled' decorating date on Saturday. There were Tiki Huts, Palm Trees, grass skirts and lots of Margarita's. Thank you to everyone who helped decorate, brought in appetizers, and took down all the decorations. The music was awesome, food was super and everyone had an excellent time.

New trees

Thanks to Kray Small and Chris Clarke for removing the old trees out front and arranging to have 2 new trees delivered.

Comedy Night 2007

This year's Comedy night was moved to Saturday rather than Sunday. And we had the biggest turn out ever. 124 people attended this year for an awesome Roast Pork dinner. The comedians were hysterical. We will be looking into having a 2nd comedy night possibly in the fall. If you missed this one, be sure to get your tickets early, as this one might be sold out also.

Conservation Camp
August 5-17, 2007, Chesterfield Scout Reservation

The following have been chosen to attend: Ryan Harwood and Zachary Hughes

Scholarship

The Woodville Rod and Gun Club chose Nicholas Mauch of Southboro as the recipient of the 2007 Environmental Scholarship. Nick, who attends Algonquin Regional High School, has been accepted at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and will be studying landscape architecture. Good luck to Nick from the folks at the Woodville Rod and Gun Club

Annual Trout Derby

Saturday, April 21st, was the first really good day of spring this year and it was a great day to hold a trout derby. At 5:00 am the early birds started coming into the clubhouse for eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and home fries. The boats were bottlenecked at the boat ramp by 5:30 am. All in anticipation of catching some of the big fish the club stocked ($1800 worth!!) in Lake Whitehall the previous Wednesday. This year we saw larger average fish than past years averages going into the lake along with a few brooders as well. A donation jar in memory of Frank Wylie Jr. collected $300 for BIG fish in addition to our regular offerings. Quite a few fish were stocked along the Winter Street side of the lake and by the dam (to the benefit of the shore fishermen), the rest were distributed in the main body of the lake, at the southern end, and a few between the islands. Maybe it was caused by the beautiful day, or just the desire to get out of the house, but we had a great turnout of 83 people. The lake was plied with boats trolling lines, or drifting and the mates casting about for trout. It's always great to see families and friend getting together to fish. The Schiloski family rocked Pout Rock once again this year. These boys have had a family tradition now for many years on that rock, now the next generation has been joining them. The good thing is if you're there first they don't kick you out; they just absorb you into their fun! Only one boat had a motor problem, get that thing fixed yet Geno? No report of anyone trolling over another's lines either. A lot of families were seen together, some with 3 generations fishing.

To everyone that worked to make this yet another successful derby, the person who orders the fish, all the helpers in the kitchen, the Derby Judge Kim Clark, and everyone else who helped many, many thanks! And we have to tell you, the first fish that Kim had to handle was quite hilarious. That fish wanted no part of staying in her hands to be measured. If we had it on film, we'd have won America's Funniest Videos.

The fish are still out there as proven by Jeff Leal who caught an 18" rainbow the morning of Sunday, April 29th.

The 2007 Trout Derby winners are:

    1. Patti "PK" Smith 2. Tom Rosoff 3. Patrick Mayer
L-R: Patrick Mayer, Patti "PK" Smith, Derby Judge Kim Clark, Tom Rosoff

Bass Derby Inquires

Occasionally a member inquires as to why we don't have a bass derby. In years past we have had bass derbies, which were poorly attended. Recent polls of members haven't been made, but maybe we should take another look at this subject. The lake across the street does have large bass and a number of bass tournaments are held there each year, one was held April 28th. If we decided to host a bass derby we would be required to get a permit from the State to utilize the boat ramp area for the judges table (this would be a catch and release derby). The cost of holding the derby would be minimal (no trout to stock), but a good prize would have to be guaranteed in order to attract more fishermen. Contact Lee Wright if you are interested in attending a derby, so that we can determine if there is enough interest to justify setting it up.

General Information:

If you have turned 65 and have 5 years of membership you are entitled to a life membership. Please contact the club if this applies to you.
