Woodville Rod and Gun Spring Blood Drive 2008

Sunday, June 8th, Woodville Rod and Gun held its 3rd blood drive. The blood drives are organized by club member Frank Wylie. This spring's drive was an astounding success with 57 donating out of 64 people who signed up or were walk in's; this amounts to 7 gallons + 1 pint! Children's Hospital in Boston are the benefactor's of this drive who said this was the best ever.. The blood donated can help over 200 children! These blood drives are in memory of Laura Nardini, the daughter of member Gene and his wife Carol.

Frank deserves a lot of credit for his work on these drives; from scheduling the donation bus, getting people scheduled, calling to remind these people of their commitment, organizing food for the event, and keeping the line onto the bus full. And thanks to Gene for his donations of food. We need to continue these efforts and let's aim to have even more donations at the drive this fall! Great Job Frank, Thank you for all your efforts. And a huge Thank you to all who took time out of their day to donate.

Kids Fishing Derby

Many thanks once again to Gary Truell and his crew for all their hard work gathering materials and coordinating the Kids' Fishing Derby.

Thank you to the Pratt Family for the use of the pond and adjoining area.

As tradition has it, the night before the derby volunteers worked down at the pond preparing the area and did an awesome job. Saturday morning the tally board, tables, chairs, prizes, signs, grill area and measuring station equipment were brought in and set up.

Saturday morning started out a bit gray. The starter's pistol was fired and before long the smiling participants were bringing their catches to be measured and recorded on the tally board. Mother Nature had a change of heart and smiled down on Pratt's pond bringing out the sun and with that, many more children came to fish. There were bass, trout, catfish, shiners, lots of pan fish and two turtles brought in to be measured. This year there were no frogs. Although the geese were curious, they kept their distance swimming in the pond.

Some children just did not want to touch the fish, so they'd bring them wrapped in shirt sleeves or towels and some still on the hook. Some were encouraged to hold onto their catch which resulted in some very interesting facial expressions and sounds.

The grill was fired up and there were plenty of burgers, dogs and drinks to go around. The starter's pistol signaled the end of fishing and the tally board was checked. Participants were gathered, trophies presented and prizes given out. The raffle ensured each child went home with a prize. There were many smiles to be seen and shared. All in all a beautiful day in Woodville!

Rifle Range:

A big thank you to Kevin and his daughter Eileen Long, Rick Vincuilla, Skip Lukey, and Marcel Remillard for the recent work to the rifle range. Also, thank you to Dan Bobillier for donating the beams and plywood. The berm has had a face lift (much needed), a frame for rifle targets and a separate frame for shotguns have been erected. There is plywood mounted on the rifle frame to tack targets to. The area has also been cleaned and the shooting area has had the brass swept up. Members help in this area is also required by properly disposing of your used targets and depositing your used brass in the buckets provided when you're done shooting.

Another note to those who use the range; if you feel the need to shoot closer than 100 yards you must move closer to the targets. Do not shoot at targets placed half way down the range as this is an unsafe practice.

Summer Months

Are typically slow around the clubhouse, and there is not a lot to report on. There will be the seafood bake in August. And, hopefully, the new extension to the roof over the rear entrance will be started soon. So, if there isn't the usual content here, it isn't because we're getting lazy, it's because we just don't want to make stuff up… Enjoy the summer!
