New Business
  • Steve Monahan is the winner of the 12’ Ugly Stick and a Shimano 6500 Bait Runner Reel. We are now raffling off a 10’ Shakesphere Big Eye Ugly Stick with a Penn 5600 Live liner reel. This will be drawn at the Seafood Bake. The next raffle will be for a 9 ½’ Ugly Stick and Penn Live reel and will be drawn at our Chicken BBQ in September. Call the club for details.

  • On Friday night, July 11, the “Summer Street Band” joined us at the club to supply us with the tunes for a night of dancing and relaxing with friends. Their specialties are oldies but goodies, and they said they had a lot of fun entertaining us, and would welcome an invitation to come back and visit again. A raffle was also held, and everyone joined in on the fun, even the band!! My thanks to those members that lent a hand in making this event happen, and getting the public to attend. We hope to see more members attend the next jam session!

  • Environmental Scholarships

For the second year in a row, the Scholarship committee of the Woodville Rod and Gun Club has awarded a $500.00 scholarship to a senior pursuing a degree in an environmental science! The Scholarship committee, which is composed of Dave Laquidara, Kray Small, and Liam Shalvey, granted this year’s scholarship to Gemma Kite of Hopkinton. Environmental education includes an interest in pursuing a degree in wildlife, habitat, fisheries or forestry management, environmental or marine biology at an accredited college or university.

Awards are given to a student after completing
their 1st year with a 3.0 grade average.

Dave, who leads the scholarship committee, is a teacher of 34 years and is well versed in the scholarship application process. Each spring, Dave contacts the schools in the Metro-West area and explains the criteria we use for choosing one senior for this award.

Dave explained to me (Lj) that preference is given to a close relative or member of the Woodville Rod & Gun Club, and is based on financial need. He also stated that all of this scholarship money comes from raffles and fund raising specifically designated as being for the Scholarship fund. For example, last year Kray Small donated all of his proceeds from the Chicken Barbeque T-Shirt sales to the scholarship fund. A tip of the hat to you, Kray!

Dave also explained to me that the goals of this program are:

    • To be a good neighbor in the community
    • To be an environmentally responsible organization
    • To financially support Metro-west senior that show an interest in environmental issues

For more information about the Scholarship application process, please see our website at www.woodvillerodandgun.com or send a stamped self-addressed letter to:

  • The Story of the Woodville R&G Kids Fishing Derby

Watching Gary Truell and Rusty Hewins put this event together is sort of like watching a magic act by Penn and Teller – almost magically a lot of volunteers show up and it’s a good time for everyone! A lot of preparation goes into this event and the refreshments are truly appreciated.

Events - This event is usually held on the first Saturday in June at Joe Pratt’s pond, and kids from all around look forward to it. The derby is open to all of the Woodville R&G member’s kids and guests, and this year there were over 60 kids. It started at 8:00 a.m. and ran until 12:00 noontime. Prizes were then distributed from 12-1 p.m. Over 50 fish, turtles, frogs and assorted trees were caught, and every fish was measured. There were free hot dogs, and hamburgers served to all (including the parents).

Every Kid went home with a gift… - We’ve had a good year with a lot of generous members and we were able to give away lots of gifts including fishing rods, tackle box, lures, nets, flashlights, and three special rods as top prizes! A dozen trophies were awarded to kids in numerous divisions.

What’s in it for us… - Gary explained to me that his motivation for this event is seeing the thrill on a kid’s face when they catch a fish. I (Lj) agree that it is a wonderful feeling seeing a kid get hooked on fishing.

…And Thanks for the Fish - Many thanks to the clean up for clearing around the perimeter of the pond, for the judges, and those that cooked. And a special thanks to Joe Pratt and his sons Robert and Tom for allowing us to use their property.

Next year, I suggest that we will build a bigger boat ramp and limit the speed on Joe Pratt’s Pond to 25 MPH… ;^).

  • Lj's Sporting Tips August:
    • Compasses are critical while hunting in the woods, and many hunters carry two compasses in case one compass is misplaced or is broken. Keep in mind that many things can affect the accuracy of a compass – including gun barrels, some cell phones and walkie-talkies.

  • To all the hunters, fishing men and women out there. Care to share any hunting or fishing stories? We’d be happy to listen and publish your story in the Message and put it on the web page. Come to the member meetings and share your stories!! Congrats to all of you who hit your mark during the hunting season!!

  • Don’t forget Trap shooting on Sunday afternoons. We start around 1:30. Come on down and join in the fun. And to the archery enthusiasts, work is progressing on the new stands for the archery range! Thank you for the hard work being put in by a certain few of our members.
