Deep Sea Fishing Trip

The club sponsored a fishing trip on Aug. 12. The sun had not come up yet as we boarded the bus (approx. 45 of us) for the trip to Lynn @ 5:00am. By 6:30am, we were on the boat and on our way with hopes of finding a good fishing spot. As we headed out to sea, the sun was coming up and breaking thru the clouds. Folks were getting themselves ready for the day of fishing. Soon after dropping the fishing lines, we started catching fish. Haddock, cod and wolf fish seemed to be the catch of the day. We also had a few, or I should say, more than a few, dogfish(?). (As a first timer, I hope I have the name correct). All in all we ended up 39 miles off the shore, and I believe everyone had caught something by the time we started heading back in to shore. We fished in 3 different spots with water depths up to 330 feet. On the ride home, some enjoyed playing cards, some napped and others enjoyed the view from the top deck, sharing stories and a camaraderie that is often felt around the club. Many thanks to Steve G. for organizing this event. Also, thanks to the club for sponsoring the trip. Hopefully, it's the first of more to come. And, if you have never eaten Wolf fish, you have got to try it. Delicious!! Dennis G. caught a 13lb. Wolf fish which was the largest fish caught for the day.

Annual Chicken Barbeque

It was under sunny skies, and perfect weather for a cookout, that approx. 370 people came out to attend the biggest event of the year for the Woodville Rod & Gun Club. Young and old alike attended the 78th annual Chicken BBQ. Throughout the afternoon, people participated in the shooting events, archery, and the horseshoe tournament. As always the money wheel was a big attraction. As an added attraction for the children, we had a clown making balloon animals and playing card tricks.

Before the main meal there were plenty of hamburgers and hot dogs, along with delicious apple fritters and corn chowder. Between 3:00-4:00 the main meal came out with salad, rolls and butter, 1/2 a chicken, corn on the cob and a baked potato. This year chocolate and vanilla cakes were served for dessert.

Between 1:00 and 4:00 the ranges were very busy. There were many youngsters and a few oldsters who got to shot a gun for the first time.

As usual, the .410, .22, and black powder shoots were very popular with the children (under close supervision of course). There was a continuous line for the .22 shoot, both children and adults. The black powder shoot is a competition to shoot a .50 caliber ball at the blade of a double headed axe buried in the butt end of a log with a clay bird on either side of it. The object is to split the ball and break both birds. We had 2 adults and 2 children perform this feat!

The trap range had many members helping and had a great turnout. There were some people who hadn't shot in years back for a try.

Many thanks go out to the people on the ranges who donate time and equipment to make each year a safe and fun time for our guests.

And many thanks go out to Frenchie and his many cooks, servers, helpers of all ages, the bartenders and all the folks that helped from setting up tables, washing pots and pans, emptying trash, etc, etc,. making this another successful event at the club. See below for the names of all the winners!

Trap Shooting:

The trap range is open on Sunday afternoons at 1:30.

This is a great way to great ready for bird hunting, which starts in only a few weeks (October 15th). New members get the first two boxes of shells free. Let the range officer (or anybody who's shooting) know it's your first time and you will get personal attention. The people with experience will explain the game, and give you pointers on how to bust the clays. Caution: this sport can be addicting…

Lj's tip for September:

When fishing bait in salt waters with riprap on the bottom, like Cape Cod canal, use a bank sinker, it's tear-drop shape reduces the chance of getting hung up on the rocks, When fishing bait on sandy bottoms use a "pyramid" sinker, it's flat sides tend not to roll in the surf or tides.

This Time of Year:

It's the best time of year; the stripers and blues are getting ready to make their fall migration and are feeding heavily on peanut bunker, sand eels, squid, and other bait. Soon after we'll be in the woods after birds or throwing shafts at deer. Next thing you know it'll be Thanksgiving and we'll be toting shot guns loaded with slugs. Then Christmas rolls around and we'll be off to walk on water to our favorite spots for some hard water fishing. Man I love New England in the fall and winter…

Congratulations to member Greg Montalbano:

And the newly formed Worcester Tornadoes baseball team. This first year team in the Can-Am League is coached by former Red Sox Rich Gedman. They won the semi-final series against the New Haven Cutters. In the fourth game Greg pitched 2 1/3 innings striking out 6 batters. Awesome job Greg! They now move on to play the Quebec Capitales for a five game series. We wish Greg the best of luck! More information about this new team and their game schedules can be found on their website: www.worcestertornadoes.com.

Club President Dennis Smith, wants to make an honorable mention to our Vice President Mike Collins for the excitement he added to the game when he spilled his tray of Nachos on the Mayor of the City of Worcester during the first televised game. Way to go Mike!!

Woodville 150:

The "Woodville 150" trapshoot has been extended until the end of October. Like last year, this gives members more time to come down and shoot their six rounds, now that things are slowing down.

General Information:

If you have turned 65 and have 5 years of membership you are entitled to a life membership. Please contact the club if this applies to you.

Friendly reminder - We are always looking for help at the club events and functions. If you need to complete your 3 new member details, this is a way to do that. You see the club events published in this article. Mark them on your calendars as a reminder, check with your sponsor to see if anything is coming up or stop by the club and see what's happening. An extra pair of hands always makes the chore easier, and more fun!
