Dues are due

It's that time of year again. Please remember that the dues have been increased to $80.00. It's been many years since we've had an increase. We apologize for having to do this at this time, but everything from paper goods to utilities have increased dramatically. We held off as long as possible.

If you have a hardship paying your dues this year, please contact someone from the membership committee. We'd rather work it out with you than loose a valuable member.

President-Elect Mike Collins Describes His Goals for the 2007 Year:

  1. Increase the volunteer participation in the club. Today we have 20% of the people doing 80% of the work. I am very proud that we had 64 members volunteer to help out for the over 400 customers at the chicken barbeque, that we had members clean out the basement, and that we had members prepare the hall for the new rugs, but the problem is that we always have the same people doing the work. We need to diversify and increase the list of volunteers so that we don't burn out our volunteers.
  2. Make the club more attractive for rentals. We must constantly improve the building and grounds of the clubhouse so that we have lots of rentals. This is a business decision that can help us reduce costs for the club.
  3. Run the club meetings as a business. Our meetings should last less than an hour, and we should have committee leads provide reports at meetings.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Over 104 dinners were served at the club on Thanksgiving Day. The dinner was turkey soup, traditional turkey, deep fried turkey, stuffing, potatoes, butternut squash, turnip, salad and rolls, and included Valet parking (great for a rainy day!). There were a lot of people who have joined us in the past, and more than a few were asking for President Smith who couldn't join us due to health reasons. Many thanks to all who helped preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up after the event. The food and company were great!

We also would like to thank our contributors of food that reduced the cost to the club this year. Casella Waste Management Services donated 7 turkeys; George Payson donated a turkey, the squash and turnips were donated by our resident farmers, Eddie Grant and the Pratts. We also had pies donated by the Lookout Farm, that included, apple, blueberry and squash. And last but not least, George Robinson cheerfully drove the Senior Bus and brought about a dozen or so seniors to the club to enjoy dinner. At a time when we are trying to continue with our traditions and the belt is getting a bit tighter, it's a pleasure to know that we have people and companies that are willing to pitch in and make a holiday that could be very lonely for some, an enjoyable experience. It was a nice site seeing people mingling and sitting and talking for a couple of hours. The smiles and expressions on their faces are priceless.

Lj's Tip

Consider giving a fishing and/or hunting license as a Holiday gift to your favorite sportsperson.

Lj's 3rd Stool at the Bar

This is a great time of year to hang out at the club and listen to hunting stories. See if you can recognize these stories from the following punch lines:

  1. "…and then the buck sank in the pond!"
  2. "Hey Ricey, got a cigarette?"
  3. "…and the deer were just jumping like popcorn!"
  4. "Hey, this stuff really does work!"
  5. "Let's go to the dollar store."
  6. "…and then it turned into a staring contest and I couldn't move."
  7. "…and the deer fell dead fifteen feet away from him."
  8. "…and they both shot the same deer."
  9. The Pegasus deer.
  10. "If the deer had guns, we would be extinct!"
  11. "He shot that deer in self defense!"
  12. "…and there was the deer following him."

In The Planning:

VP (President after Jan. 1st) Mike Collins contacted Wildlife deer/moose project leader Bill Woytek about coming to the club and doing a presentation on the growing moose herd in the state. Bill is very knowledgeable of the deer and moose herds and is also an excellent speaker. Bill will also take questions on the deer herd after the moose presentation. We are shooting for the middle of February, but this may change. More information and the final date of the event will be posted at the clubhouse and on our website, woodvillerodandgun.com, as it becomes available.

This will be open to all members and we will be extending invitations to area clubs and town officials.

General Information:

If you have turned 65 and have 5 years of membership you are entitled to a life membership. Please contact the club if this applies to you.

Friendly reminder - We are always looking for help at the club events and functions. If you need to complete your 3 new member details, this is a way to do that. You see the club events published in this article. Mark them on your calendars as a reminder, check with your sponsor to see if anything is coming up or stop by the club and see what's happening. An extra pair of hands always makes the chore easier, and more fun!

Remember...

  • If anyone knows of a member who is sick or hospitalized, please let us know. You can leave a message at 508-435-4148.

  • Don't forget Trap shooting on Sunday afternoons. We start around 1:30. Come on down and join in the fun. Quite a few people have joined in over the past couple of months. The public is welcomed. Thank you to the members that have done some maintenance work on the trap machine which will keep things running smoothly.
  • " Goal Membership: At our last meeting Dennis Smith brought up the subject of Woodville members joining Goal. There are many benefits of being a Goal member that will also benefit us. Beside Goal representing & protecting our rights to bear arms, they also pay for you to receive the Outdoor Message, thus a cost savings for the club. Applications are at the club, in the newsletter or online at www.goal.org. If you have questions, please attend a members meeting or talk with Dennis Smith.

New members, if you need to complete your 3 work details, we still have some functions coming up that would help fulfill this obligation. Remember, anytime we have a function at the hall, there is a job to be done.

Ongoing, we can order jackets, shirts, etc. If you are interested in looking at these items please contact the club (508-435-4148). We have orange and green hats on hand, now embroidered ($8), and the newest item is a camouflaged version ($12), two styles.
